About the work
Queen of the Sea is a page from an unpublished artist book that Katz made in 2006. Using her grandfather’s original 1950’s guidebook to Venice, Katz collaged the pages with images from her own collection and research, including scenes from movie posters, scientific manuals, and family photos. The convention of a tourist guide appealed to her as a template for mapping more elusive, interior spaces. This magazine cut-out showing “a handful of flakes” predates her use of rice as a material in the paintings (which began in 2011) but seems to predict the ways in which the granular texture has become both a surface disruptor and a metaphor for the ephemeral.

About the artist

Notable group exhibitions include Mixing It Up: Painting Today, Hayward Gallery, London, UK; The Imaginary Sea, Fondation Carmignac, Porquerolles, France; Slow Painting, curated by Hayward Touring (presented at Leeds Museum and Art Gallery, Leeds, UK; Levinsky Galley, Plymouth, UK); Maskulinitäten, Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany; Paint, Also Known as Blood, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, Poland; and Puddle, Pothole, Portal, SculptureCenter, New York, NY.
