Athanasios Argianas, Caryons (Cypress Seed), 2019
Copper electroform
3 × 4 × 3 cm (variable)
Edition of 10
Signed Certificate of Authenticity included
Caryons (Cypress Seed) explores the relationship between natural and artificial forms, transforming the delicate structure of a cypress seed into a sculptural object through the process of copper electroforming. Drawing on the Greek word karyon, meaning nut or kernel, the work reflects on the intricate geometries found in nature and the relationship between organic structures and human-made forms.
The edition dates from 2019, when Athanasios Argianas was the recipient of the Freelands Lomax Ceramics Fellowship at Camden Art Centre (2018–19). During his residency, Argianas explored the intersections of sculpture, music, language and functional design, developing works concerned with the physical and sensory properties of materials.
Born in Athens in 1976, Argianas lives and works between London and Athens. His interdisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, painting, text, performance and music. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at documenta 14 in Kassel, Fondazione Prada in Venice, Kunsthalle Wien and the São Paulo Biennial. In 2020, Camden Art Centre presented his solo exhibition Hollowed Water, bringing together sculpture, sound, video and music.
