Sonia Boyce OBE RA is a British Afro-Caribbean artist who lives and works in London. Boyce's work involves a variety of media, such as drawing, print, photography, video, and sound. Her art explores "the relationship between sound and memory, the dynamics of space, and incorporating the spectator”. At the heart of Boyce’s work is an exploration of gestures and events, with an underlying focus on the personal and political subjectivities behind them. In this print, a racist exclamation dissolves gradually leaving just a trace, reflecting the fleeting nature of such encounters and the impunity of the perpetrator.

Sonia Boyce represents Britain at the Venice Biennale, where newly commissioned work fills the British pavilion from May until November 2022. Boyce's British pavilion won Venice Biennale's coveted Golden Lion for best national exhibition.

Sonia Boyce OBE RA (b.1962) is Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. In 1987, she became the first Black woman to enter the Tate’s collection when it acquired her drawing Missionary Position II (1985); in 2016 she was elected as a Royal Academician and in 2019 she was awarded an OBE for her services to art. Solo exhibitions include Sonia Boyce, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester (2018); We move in her way, ICA, London (2017); Paper Tiger Whisky Soap Theatre (Dada Nice), Villa Arson, Nice (2016); Scat – Sound and Collaboration, Iniva, Rivington Place, London (2013); Like Love – Part One, as well as Part Two and Part Three, Spike Island, Bristol and tour (2009-2010). Selected group shows include All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art, Venice (2015); Migrations: Journeys into British Art, Tate Britain, London (2012) and Sharjah International Biennale: 7, United Arab Emirates (2005).
