About the work
For over 40 years, Matt Mullican has been developing a codified language of symbols, signs, maps, charts and diagrams in an attempt to articulate the complexities of existence. Inspired by Camden Arts Centre’s history as a public library, Mullican’s exhibition layers his multiple methods of categorisation and ordering. His personal notebooks, which are a cornerstone to the exhibition, are collections of accumulated knowledge and time, recording his thoughts in lists, numbers, texts and pictures. His edition, The Sequence of Things, is a double-page spread from his notebook during the time of the exhibition’s development, testing out possible titles to represent the different ideas and relationships at play.
About the artist
Matt Mullican was born 1951 in Santa Monica, CA he now lives and works in Berlin and New York. Mullican has exhibited widely internationally, including in the UK Mullican Frame, More Details from an Imaginary Universe, at Modern Art Oxford, 2000 and Art Transpennine, Tate Liverpool , 1998. Other recent solo exhibitions include: Nothing Should Exist, Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Zürich, 2016; THAT WORLD / ESE MUNDO, Museo Tamayo, Mexico City , 2014; Books Representing Books, Kunsthalle Mainz, 2014; The Meaning of Things, Spazio Culturale Antonio Ratti, Como; Organizing the World, Haus der Kunst, Munich, 2011, and Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht. He participated in KölnSkulptur #8, Skulpturenpark Köln (2015); The Encyclopedic Palace, The Venice Biennale, Venice, 2013; documenta X, Kassel, 1997; and Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York , 1989 and 2008.
