This edition has been produced on the occasion of exhibition Head-Wig (Portrait of an exhibition), curated by Paulina Olowska, at Camden Art Centre, 2009.
About the work
Drawing on ideas from her artist curated group exhibition Head-Wig (Portrait of an exhibition) (2009) Olowska produced two silk screen editions, Coco and Rossellini. The exhibition brought together a selection of international artists under the theme of ‘perceptual ambiguity’ operating within the genre of portraiture.
The subject for the exhibition originated from Olowska’s interest in a painting by Józef Mehoffer (1869 – 1949), a leading painter of the Young Poland movement, Portrait of Artist’s Wife on Yellow Background (1907). This painting, which can be found in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, illustrates an elegant woman wearing a large fur hat but on further examination could also depict a monster with a golden eye. In the edition her masking and overlaying of images of the famous fashion icons Coco Chanel and Isabella Rossellini extend these ideas.
