About the artist

Paulina Michnowska (b. 1984) is a Polish artist based in London, educated at the Accademia di Bella Arti, Rome and the Slade School of Fine Arts, London. Her current research interests focus on the link between art, indigenous heritage and ecology.  She examines these connections through the materiality of clay, paint, and sculptural assemblages.

Paulina is currently an AHRC funded Ph.D. researcher at University of Newcastle, examining how art-based methodologies can help to preserve an endangered rainforest signing system, used by the Penan community in the Borneo Rainforest, Malaysia.lives and works in London.

Recent exhibitions include A tavola con Rochester Square, Museo della Ceramica, Savona, Italy, 2023; Capacity does not explain but cultivates a September Garden, Whitstable Biennale, 2022; and the solo show Wild Billboards, Artocene, Chamonix, 2021.

About the work
As a response to the work of Nicola L. I have produced 6 unique visual tableaux. These wall-hanged sculptural maps are made with glazed ceramic and wood, exploring the semiotic process through modular arrangement of visual symbols. The different combinations of colours, shapes, scale and materials build a visual paragraph and how the same symbols can produce variable meanings.” Paulina Michnowska
